PRINCIPLES OF CREATING A SAFER SPACE

At the Climate Security Festival, we adhere to the principles of a safer space as defined by Allianssi and promote discussions free from hate speech. These principles aim to create an environment where everyone can actively contribute to building an equal, respectful, and open atmosphere for dialogue.

We collectively create a safer space, and the agreed-upon principles bind all participants at the event:

  • Recognize your assumptions:
Respect everyone's self-determination. Try not to make assumptions about factors such as the gender, background, or opinions of others. Pay attention to your choice of words and keep in mind the diversity of people.

  • Listen and learn:
Approach new topics, situations, and people with an open mind and as an opportunity to learn and develop. Be open to feedback given to you and try to adjust your actions accordingly

  • Give and make space:
Recognize your role and position in different situations. Be actively present and act in a way that enables others to participate too.

  • Act:
If you witness any form of harassment or other inappropriate treatment, act on it in a way that suits you. By reacting you will also provide an example to others.

  • Remember to have self-compassion:
It is ok to make mistakes and ask questions. You do not need to know everything from the start.

Basically it is simple – just be a decent human being! Let’s focus on meeting each other as humans first, beyond titles, hierarchies and background

During the event, everyone has the right to feel safe without fear of discrimination, harassment, sexual or verbal harassment, or any other inappropriate conduct. If you experience harassment, observe inappropriate behavior, or are unsure about any situation, you can always contact the event staff (see contact information).

Violating the guidelines might result in removal from events or activities. That being said, we all make mistakes and there is no such thing as perfect – we also encourage everyone to be patient with their own and others’ learning
