Safer Climate Newsflash 2/2023

Hi everyone,

it’s time for another Safer Climate Newsflash (now with updated visuals - hope you like it)! Many of you have expressed interest in meeting other Safer Climate members and collaborators. Luckily, there will plenty of opportunities for that during the spring - this newsletter is focused on upcoming events that you are warmly welcome to join! To ensure that you get invitations and access to all upcoming events, join as a member. The membership is free of charge and you can join as an individual or an organization.

One of the biggest projects we are currently working on is the development of an applied science sparring model for civil society. We already hosted a successful planning meeting in December and I’m currently negotiating with several organizations about the next steps. For those who couldn’t join last time, we will organize another science sparring info as part of our upcoming network get-together (details & registration form below).

All in all, there’s a lot coming up and I will share all the details with you as soon as I can! Both metaphorically and literally, I feel that Safer Climate has managed to gather a room full of people from varying organizations and backgrounds. Now let's see where we can go from here and who else we can invite to join us in this space to work for a safer climate. This network welcomes all kinds of suggestions, questions, ideas and criticism that can help develop our work.

UPCOMING EVENT

(EN) Join our Safer Climate network get-together in late February! Click the link to read more and fill in this form to pre-register and choose your preferred dates. You can also suggest themes, activities or a short talk for the meeting. Details of the meeting will be confirmed after we fix the date. Related to this meeting, we will also organize a brief science sparring info for those who weren’t able to join last time.

Save the date: Climate Change and Green Transitions as Global Challenges for Science and Society 11.-14.4.2023

Safer Climate will host a breakfast event for the network members on the morning of Tuesday 11.4 and a panel discussion later on the day as a part of the Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center’s Impact Week. Confirmed panel speakers include Prof. Anneli Pauli (INAR, University of Helsinki), Dr. Theresia Bilola (Think Africa) and Advocacy and Communications Specialist Pekka Reinikainen (Finnish Red Cross).

The opening day also includes talks from, among others, ACCC director, Professor Markku Kulmala, President Tarja Halonen and Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto. SAVE THE DATE: We will be hosting a transdisciplinary session titled Climate & Death during the Sustainability Science Days 2023, organized by Aalto University and Helsinki Institute of Sustainability HELSUS in May. The invited session is organized in collaboration with Tunne ry and The Finnish Death Studies Association. Stay tuned for more a detailed schedule and program.
